The match was interrupted on two occasions. The first interruption occurred right after the kickoff due to a large pyrotechnic display that caused smoke to cover the pitch. As a result, the referee sent the players back to the locker rooms just one minute into the game. The second interruption happened in the middle of the first half when a thrown object from the crowd hit Ajax player Davy Klaassen, leaving him bloodied. The players were taken off the field once again. Despite the interruptions, Ajax managed to win the game 2-1.
